Seeking for learning quality evolution

Updated: Jul 21, 2024

The new trends of learning content creation, shows us how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can generate in a matter of seconds, customised courses outlines, assessments, rubrics and curriculum mapping from given parameters such as the course topic, description, desired learning outcomes and skills. If so, the role and responsibility of the learning content creator is rapidly shifting from developing educational materials and resources to tasks of content curation, personalisation, learners support and analytics. This shift is particularly impactful in the design of adult learning programs due to the high volume of providers and diversity of content.

In this transitional process of adaptation to the AI, in addition to the teams up-skilling in critical thinking, regarding content curation, the functional quality standards have to be revisited in the development of adult learning programs. The most fundamental and critical internal quality standards to include in your next course development, as learning provider (ENQA, 2023; EKKA, 2022) are the following:

ree
  • Design and approval of programs standard: where providers should have processes to design and approve programs, ensuring they meet their objectives and intended learning outcomes.

  • Learner - centred learning standard: where programs should encourage learners to actively participate in the learning process, with assessments reflecting this approach.

  • Pedagogical staff standard: where providers must ensure the competence of teachers and content creators.

  • Learning resources and learners support standard: where providers must ensure adequate and accessible material.

  • Particular internal standards: where providers must integrate other dimensions of the learning process that are particular to their service, such as internal policies and information management.

As the learning content creation is transitioning, the quality assurance needs to rethink and reframe standards. Here are forward-thinking standards that should increase their importance in the coming years (Tlili, et al., 2023):

  • Content trustworthiness standard: providers must ensure the quality and accuracy of the information used for their assessments, rubrics and supporting material.

  • Ethical standard: programs should encourage the use of diverse resources and methodologies to avoid the over-exposure to the use of AI as unique source of information.

  • Privacy standard: providers should have privacy procedures to decrease the over-exposure of private and demographic information of the learner’s through their learning journey.

  • Learning pathways standard: programs must ensure to design programs where skills-sets have the potential to be combined with further learning and move along a career pathway.

Nowadays, as learning providers, content creators and policy-makers, it is decisive to reimagine the coming scenarios where traditional quality standards keep their relevance and essence, but new forward-thinking parameters will ensure that learners, in this ocean of possibilities, to access curated content that is well structured according to accurate learning outcomes into a lifelong learning approach.
